Context and Purpose: Kenya Markets Trust (KMT) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) whose vision is to enable the sustainable transformation of markets for the benefit of the poor. This involves working in partnership to facilitate improved functioning of markets, and to build capacity to make markets work better.  

There is widespread agreement that the best way to improve the economic conditions of the poor is through improving the functioning of markets.  One method which has found success is the “Making Markets Work for the Poor” (M4P) approach developed by a group of donors, practitioners and academicians. KMT uses the M4P methodology to facilitate “better markets, better lives”.
Kenya Market Assistance Programme (MAP) is funded by Department for International Development (DFID), Gatsby charitable foundation and The Embassy of the Netherlands and implemented by Adam Smith International and Kenya Markets Trust.  
The Knowledge and Results Manager, being a part of Knowledge and Results Team (KRT), is to manage the effective application of MAP’s results measurement framework across all interventions within the MAP portfolio and to enable effective reporting of programme results and performance to the board, donors and key stakeholders.

Main objectives

To manage reporting against the programme logical framework To advise sector managers in application of the Results Measurement Framework including how to construct results chains, develop measurement plans, establish attribution strategies, set baselines and undertake monitoring activities against measurement plans.To collect and analyse MAP’s results measurement data and assist the MAP senior management team in reporting on programme performance.To participate in MAP’s portfolio review. To ensure MAP’s management and measurement systems are compliant with the DCED Results Measurement Standard.Reporting to the Knowledge and Results Senior Manager, you will be expected to:Update the log frame and reporting on programme performance against the log frame targets in line with the reporting calendar. Receive quarterly reports form the sectors team, and carry out the necessary, review, refinement and finalisation, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Train and mentor MAP programme staff (Sector teams) and sub-contractors and support the development of Intervention Plans (Results Chain, Measurement Plan etc.)Regularly review the quality of results chains and work with sector teams and sub-contractors to make improvements. Provide leadership and technical support to sector managers and sub-contractors in undertaking monitoring activities. Undertake annual impact assessment of MAP sectors and ensure proper Baseline and Impact Assessment plans are conducted and executed on time either by internal or external teams.Receive tracker data from sector teams and prepare analysis pieces as needed. Support the preparation of case studies and research pieces as and when requested by Senior Manager.Organise, facilitate and contribute to the quarterly portfolio review meetings and share insights on sector performance. Coach MAP/KMT staff and sub-contractors in the application of the DCED Results Measurement Standard.Support the DCED pre-audit review and full audit on MAP’s Result Measurement System.Regularly update MAP’s results measurement tools and framework in line with best practice.A degree level in a relevant discipline such as Business Management, Economics, Statistics, Agribusiness, Development Studies or Marketing.5-7 years of experience working in M&E/Results Measurement or Research within development organizations or private sector or similar scope.  Demonstrated experience of managing both Qualitative and Quantitative research and handling large data set.Strong analytical skills on economic modelling such as cost-benefit analysis, financial modelling etc.Knowledge of developing results chains, log frame and DCED standard.Knowledge of M4P approach/Value chain development will be added advantage.Experience of sector stakeholder mapping and engagement; developing partnerships and managing relationships with donors, NGOs, private sector and government agencies.In-depth knowledge on Kenyan economy, agriculture and how business works in rural marketsExcellent report writing and verbal communication.Good negotiation and influencing skills.Very good with MS Excel and SPSS.How to Apply: Send your application including a cover letter demonstrating why you are the best suited candidate for this role; a detailed CV highlighting relevant experience and achievements, details of current and expected salary, a day time phone contact, email address, the names of three professional referees and a recent photo to:

TMEA is looking for an enthusiastic and professional Results Programme Manager responsible for developing and maintaining a sharp results and learning focus. 

S/he will manage a small team and assist TMEA and partners to monitor and evaluate projects. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and people competencies, strong conceptual and analytical skills along with the ability to communicate results effectively to stakeholders.
Experience will include developing clear outcomes, indicators and measurement plans, and designing and using evaluation tools such as questionnaires, interview guides and assessment rubrics and developing the capacity of others to do the same. Working as a change agent, the candidate will identify and implement innovative solutions to improve development effectiveness.
The individual will have at least six years’ experience in managing monitoring and evaluation systems and  teams on large development programmes and sound knowledge of different monitoring and evaluation approaches and methods. A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as evaluation, social science, or economics, preferably with a strong research component and/or specific training in monitoring, evaluation, research methods and data analysis is required.
This post is a fixed term contract ending 31 December 2014 and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya with occasional travel within East Africa.

Consultancy to Develop a Results Oriented Information Management System
Turkana and Garissa districts are affected by recurrent natural disasters, conflict and are among the poorest regions in Kenya.
Additional pressure from refugees on existing natural resources such as water, pasture and firewood, which are at the bare minimum due to recurrent droughts, often increase tension and lead to conflict between refugees and communities hosting them. The exposure to diseases outbreak is heightened as health and sanitation facilities are stretched to the limit with women and children being the most affected.
To address this, UNDP together with GOK have developed a project as a medium term measure to support recovery as well as build resilience of communities especially youth and women’s groups affected by the drought and to strengthen institutions responsible for recovery and disaster risk reduction work. The interventions address short term livelihoods economic recovery needs of youth and women while establishing in the process the capacities and building blocks of sustainable local long-term development.

1. Campaign, Advocacy and Lobbying (CAL) Programme Officer

Overall responsibilities:

Responsible for implementing programmes and projects in the Campaign Advocacy and Lobby docket in PELUM Kenya and contribute effectively for maximum impact and results.

The ideal candidate should:

Responsible for initiating and driving development results monitoring and reporting in PELUM Kenya in line with monitoring and reporting requirements.

S/he ensures that optimal monitoring and evaluation requirements for PELUM-Kenya programmes and projects are met.

The RBM Programme Officer ensures that objective evaluations are designed and implemented to assess the country programme relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact and sustainability of results; evaluations carried out in a credible, participatory and systematic manner; evaluation lessons and recommendations are used for programme design and should contribute effectively to implementation of PELUM Kenya’s programmes for maximum impact and results.

The ideal candidate should:

I wish someone had told me that "failing" KCSE was not a death sentence. With the glorification of those that pass KCSE, one would think that passing exams is the only ticket to success in life. Granted, it is one of the many possible routes to success. However, it is not the only one or the most superior of the others, despite conventional wisdom alluding to that.

What do we look for in life? A good life. Survival, sustenance, security, comfort, recognition and actualization; the sense of fulfilling a higher divine purpose. My experience is that you do not get all these by only having passed KCSE.

Our educational system conditions our minds that we only need good grades, go through the hops of institutions, graduate, get a good job and a good life automatically falls into place. This does not always turn out to be true. To add to that, only a small percentage of those who start the first institutional hop in baby class make it to the graduate stage. Further only a smaller percentage get to the good life part.

I fault our educational system for training and conditioning students for employment rather than majoring on entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial minds, if anything, make good employees. Learning in our system, coupled by competitive ranking, reduces the education experience to a rote. It fails to a large extent to foster creative, inventive, ingenious and analytical minds.

Nevertheless, it is notable that there is a significant proportion that fall off our education system that still enjoy a good life. What can those who fail KCSE learn from this group?

The starting point is to get it out of your mind that you are a failure. The greatest fail would be to limit yourself and your potential for success in life by allowing the negative emotions of the moment to sink and engrave in your mind that you cannot excel in anything; that you have failed in life. The sooner you are out of this negative moment, the faster you will be on your way to success.
