Vacancy: Automotive Supply Chain Manager
Salary: Based on experience

Our client is an automobile company that designs, manufactures and sells highly durable, highly affordable vehicles for Africa’s mass market. 

They seek a long term commitment from an exceptional mid-career supply chain professional to lead and coordinate the development and operations of a robust international, largely outsourced supply chain to deliver our production vehicles. Purpose of the Job: The role will require a close working relationship with the venture’s CEO, Operations Director and Technical Director, engineering, production, finance and logistics teams as well as various international vendors.
 
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:Work closely with engineering and quality teams to identify, evaluate and select suppliers and contract manufacturers to support the R&D and production of cost-effective vehicle parts and subassemblies. Negotiate all commercial terms and conditions with suppliers for the procurement and delivery of parts, materials, tools, equipment and services. Support engineering projects as well as production to establish a smooth and cost effective supply chain transition from R&D to initial production to scaled production operations. Define sourcing and schedule requirements and material ramp strategy for progressively sourced domestic production components. Deliver comprehensive cost analysis as basis for price negotiations with suppliers. Perform make-or-buy analysis supported by appropriately detailed cost projections. Work with future Planning and Materials Managers to ensure accurate Material Requirements Planning (MRP) results. Develop strategy and action plan for transitioning future contract manufacturers to be fully self-sufficient and capable of sourcing, purchasing, and managing sub-tier suppliers. Manage key supplier relationships and activities, both strategic and tactical, for components and subsystems. Constantly work to improve the efficiency of the supply chain, reducing costs and increasing responsiveness to customers. Work with all involved parties to ensure continuous operation of the production line, by managing material procurement and delivery to achieve maximum inventory turns. Work with future engineering team to process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and manage its impact on production materials availability and resulting obsolescence. Work flexibly in a highly cross-functional team environment involving Automotive Designer, Automotive Engineer, Cost Engineer as well as future manufacturing and product development teams, Buyers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers and Logistics Coordinators and Finance personnel. Assist suppliers in quality assurance processes and procedures to facilitate continuous improvement of supplier and product performance. Track performance of suppliers; monitor supplier performance on delivery, quality and cost. Manage and reduce Bill of Materials (BOM) cost by establishing alternative vendors, and negotiating price and delivery schedules. Identify logistics requirements and other operational needs that may significantly impact both the successful delivery of production and total cost of the product. Perform network location analysis to determine optimal logistics footprint based on transportation cost, warehousing cost, business characteristics, service requirements, and other inputs/constraints specific to the project. Assess delivery transportation modes, routing, consolidation opportunities, and other methodologies to create an optimal transportation solution within an integrated logistics network. Develop supply chain administration tools, process and documentation. Provide support as needed with critical supply chain issues, on-site implementations, and cross-functional process improvements. Take ownership of projects; plan milestones, timelines, budgets, resources and identify potential risks to deliver supply chain aspects within agreed completion dates. Be proactive regarding task completion and periodically advise wider team on project status, timing, resources, issues, and ability to deliver on-time with excellence. Ensure adherence and compliance to general automotive industry supply chain standards and best practices; maintain structured and versioned data outputs daily and backup data weekly. Work as an active member of the team, ensure effective communication between colleagues and positively contribute regularly to meetings and briefings. Qualifications

An ideal candidate should combine outstanding technical skills in supply chain management with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. 

They should possess a strong skill set in managing global suppliers and high-profile materials programs involving contract manufacturers and progressive internal manufacturing operations along with experience in managing suppliers and materials for engineering projects, new product introduction, and production operations - preferably within the automotive industry.

Required

Mobius is an early stage social business working to enable mobility across Africa by transforming its automotive market. We recognise that appropriate transport is a key enabler to socio-economic development in deprived communities across the developing world and aim to unlock this vast potential by designing, manufacturing and selling a new vehicle for Africa, starting in Kenya.

Description

We are seeking a minimum one year commitment from an exceptional early career automotive engineer to lead the engineering, build and test of a new vehicle that will form the basis of our main product offering into the African market – a truly unique opportunity to create impact on a global scale. The role will require a close working relationship with the venture’s CEO, Automotive Designer, Cost Engineer as well as the local Kenyan mechanics and welders on the team. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Technical Engineering

Engineer prototype vehicle framework and select off-the-shelf systems collaboratively with Automotive Designer and Cost Engineer, using computer-aided design packages; pay close attention to issues of safety, reliability, economy, aesthetics and functionality. Maintain feasibility of engineering approach for low volume production tooling and limited incountry resources. For example, steel stamping presses will not be available at initial production. Determine the most suitable materials for space frame fabrication as well as the most appropriate systems to integrate within the framework (standard, off-the-shelf systems) collaboratively with the Automotive Designer and Cost Engineer. Review and revise engineering and/or production processes in response to feedback from colleagues, safety concerns, quality issues, loading requirements etc. Advise and assist team of local Kenyan mechanics and welders on the prototype vehicle build and general workplace best practices (e.g. equipment safety standards). Verify product feasibility of all welding processes and implementing programs to improve overall weld performance (e.g. conduct weld pry testing and weld teardowns). Apply mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical principles and rigor to resolve engineering problems with appropriate solutions. Ensure high quality standards throughout the vehicle build; develop test procedures and conduct tests using software packages and physical testing methods. Utilise in-country equipment and materials and adapt approach to the low-tech resources available. For example a manual pressurised pipe bender versus computerised pipe bender. Evaluate and ensure manufacturability, buildability, and integration with Automotive Designer, Cost Engineer, Supply Chain Associate and future Production Planners and Product Managers. Identify, create solutions, and resolve technical design conflicts collaboratively with Automotive Engineer and Cost Engineer. Coordinate input from external customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions of product collaboratively with Automotive Designer.

Project Management

Lead and facilitate engineering review sessions; revise approach with stakeholder feedback. Take ownership of projects; plan milestones, timelines, budgets, resources and identify potential risks to deliver engineering aspects within agreed completion dates. Description

We are seeking a minimum one year commitment from an exceptional early career automotive designer to lead the end-to-end design of our third prototype vehicle. This prototype will form the basis of our main product offering into the African market – a truly unique opportunity to create impact on a global scale. The role will require a close working relationship with the venture’s CEO, Automotive Engineer, Cost Engineer as well as the local Kenyan mechanics and welders on the team. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Technical Design

Create original exterior (body) and interior design ideas utilising electronic tools and propose new design concepts; consider aesthetics, safety, durability, economy and functionality. Maintain feasibility of design for low volume production tooling and limited in-country resources. For example, steel stamping presses will not be available at initial production. Make perspective sketches and digital models in scale sufficient to communicate new exterior and interior design ideas; develop 2D and 3D mock-ups of proposed design solutions. Build in scale physical models of exterior digital models and integrate refinements to physical model back into an updated digital model. Prepare major design layouts collaboratively with Automotive Engineer and Cost Engineer,including design calculations to achieve functional performance. Model automotive interior/exterior components and/or complete product systems/assemblies using CAD where such components or systems are sourced off-the-shelf (typical). Design automotive interior/exterior components and/or complete product systems/assemblies using CAD where such components or systems are not sourced off-the-shelf (atypical); integrate interior/exterior components and systems design into vehicle sub-systems. Evaluate and ensure manufacturability, buildability, and integration with Automotive Engineer, Cost Engineer, Supply Chain Associate and future Production Planners and Product Managers. Identify, create solutions, and resolve technical design conflicts collaboratively with Automotive Engineer and Cost Engineer. Coordinate input from external customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions of product.

Project Management

Lead and facilitate design review sessions; revise designs with stakeholder feedback. Take ownership of projects; plan milestones, timelines, budgets, resources and identify potential risks to deliver design aspects within agreed completion dates. Be proactive regarding task completion and periodically advise wider team on project status, timing, resources, issues, and ability to deliver on-time with excellence. Ensure adherence and compliance to general automotive industry design standards and best practices; maintain structured and versioned data outputs daily and backup data weekly. Work as an active member of the team, ensure effective communication between colleaguesand positively contribute regularly to meetings and briefings.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate should combine outstanding technical skills in design and strong knowledge of automotive engineering with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. They should be rigorous, pragmatic and on-the-ground solution focussed – not overly academic.

Required

Bachelor degree (minimum) in Industrial Design, Automotive Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar 3.4 GPA or higher from a top university worldwide 1-2 years of automotive-related experience, preferably on a vehicle design project Ability to read and write design and manufacturing drawings Proficiency in SolidWorks, Unigraphics or AutoCAD Ability to create and communicate new design ideas Strong understanding of design form, particularly modern styles (preferably award winning) Excellent drawing and graphic skills Demonstrated creative proficiency with supporting portfolio Ability to create perspective sketches and renderings in scale and full size Experience and understanding of materials used in exterior and interior components Passion for prototype development and a pragmatic attitude Ability to adapt to a dynamic working environment and work within a diverse team Extreme patience and a good sense of humour Excellent oral and written communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with others High level of analytical and problem solving skills Automotive Designer 3 of 3 Mobius Motors Ability to self manage; taking ownership of projects: budgeting, work planning, resource management and reporting A start-up personality; entrepreneurial, ambitious, independent, systematic attention to detail, structured thinker, goal-oriented, flexible and able to deal well with setbacks

Masters degree (or higher) in Industrial Design, Automotive Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar 2-5 years of automotive-related experience, preferably on a vehicle design project Detailed understanding of automotive exteriors, interiors, manufacturing and operations Deep knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and computer graphics Involvement in a dune-buggy/sandrail build specifically Fluency in Kiswahili (the national language of Kenya)
