We are growing quickly. In seven years, we have grown to serve 180,000 farm families with more than 500 full-time field staff.

Job Description: We are looking for an extremely organised, passionate and capable individual to take charge of providing Kiswahili language tuition to a number of members of our team – primarily people for whom English is a first language.  

This includes developing lesson plans, providing classes directly to individual people or groups, tracking progress, and developing assessments. All of this will need to be done for people who will start with many different levels of skill in Kiswahili and languages in general, but with an aim to bringing these people to being able to work fluently in Kiswahili within a short period of time. The successful candidate may also be asked to provide some translation services to our organisation, depending on workload.

Essential Skills and Experience

At least 2 years’ experience teaching Kiswahili to English speaking adults.Ability to develop plans and timelines for students’ learning needs.Ability to motivate students to improve their skills.Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.  Strong writing and email correspondence skills are a must.Competent with computer software, including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel in particular).A welcoming and humble demeanour, essential for making students feel comfortable and supported. Strong ability to work within deadlines and stick to schedulesAbility to multitask and prioritise – You will be managing lesson plans for a number of people with very different needs. Attention to detail – One Acre Fund has exceptionally high standards and it is the responsibility of everyone on the team to meet these standards.Ability to work under minimum supervision – our aim is that the successful candidate will be in a position to manage this language service independently after a short time with us.Must live or be willing to relocate to Bungoma, Western Kenya. Desirable Skills and ExperienceLeadership experience – We need a pioneer to lead the development of this service. Experience working in an NGO environment or in the ‘International Development’ sector.  Teaching of Students: Hands-on development of language skills for many members of our team. You should provide clear lesson plans, give students timelines as to how they should progress, regularly assess their development, and give constructive feedback to them based on these assessments.It would be our aim that someone who commits to your classes would be able to work well through Kiswahili after 16 weeks.
Scheduling Your Work: You would provide current and prospective students with tools which help them to book time with you and to have ownership over their schedules.
Student Motivation: You will be responsible for finding creative ways to mobilise students to take your classes, and motivate students to continue to improve. Your manager will support you with these, but development of ideas for incentive systems or motivation techniques will need to come from you.
Translation Services: Depending on your workload, you may be asked to support other parts of our team by providing translation services for field materials. You will be responsible for developing tools which will allow other members of the One Acre Fund team to reserve time with you to provide these services.

Compensation: 25,000Ksh monthly with possibility of future increases based on performance.

Invitation to Submit Literary Text Titles for English, Kiswahili and French Set Books Evaluation, Selection and Approval 2012

The Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) wishes to invite Publishers registered or legally represented in Kenya to purchase the English, Kiswahili and French Set Books Submission, Evaluation, Selection and Approval
Guidelines 2012. These Guidelines contain details on what to submit, conditions for submission, and the system of evaluation and selection.
Publishers should therefore submit literary text titles to the Kenya Institute of Education in accordance with the requirements and time-table established in the Guidelines.
The English, Kiswahili and French Set Books Submission, Evaluation, Selection and Approval Guidelines 2012 may be purchased from the Director KIE, on payment of a non-refundable fee of Kenya Shillings Ten Thousand (Kshs. 10,000/=) only.
All submissions should be received at KIE not later than 6 September 2012, and must be accompanied by the appropriate amount of evaluation and selection fees in Banker’s Cheque payable to the Director, KIE.
The Literary Text Titles to be submitted shall include:
3. Plays from the Rest of the World.1. Riwaya Kutoka Afrika Mashariki
B. Diploma in Teacher Education
 3. Anthologies of Short Stories

The Human Resources Office (HRO) has an opening for the position of Language Instructor (Kiswahili).The incumbent of this position will work in “Part-Time” status (20 hour work week). The position will beavailable immediately.

The Language Instructor will instruct employees and/or dependents in the Kiswahili Language. NOTE: All must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
Completion of secondary school is required; two years formal training in Kiswahili language also required.
One to three years of experience in positions requiring the application of instructional skills and techniques and effective communication with students to gain and hold their interest required. Level IV (fluent) English ability is required and Level IV (fluent) Kiswahili ability also required.
Ability to communicate effectively with the relatively mature level of students (employees) being taught. WHEN EQUALLY QUALIFIED, U.S. CITIZEN ELIGIBLE FAMILY MEMBER (USEFMs) AND U.S.
VETERANS WILL BE GIVEN PREFERENCE. THEREFORE, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE

FilmAid International (FilmAid Kenya) invites qualified Kenyan applications to fill the above position on a part time basis.

FilmAid International is a non-governmental organization that uses film to promote health, strengthen communities and enrich the lives of the world’s vulnerable and uprooted.

FilmAid is currently implementing programmes in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya.

Project Background/Description:

FilmAid International in conjunction with Sundance Institute and Film FORWARD is partnering to host a Film Festival in Kakuma, Dadaab and Nairobi as part of advancing cultural dialogue. Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organization that discovers and supports independent film and theatre artists from the U.S. and around the world, and introduces audiences to their new work.

The collaboration will see a series of films by Sundance Institute/Film FORWARD and FilmAid showcased during this period. The films will be show to refugee and local audiences in Kenya who are mainly Somali, Swahili and English speakers.

Responsibilities:

Translate scripts from English to Kiswahili and Somali
Work closely with the production consultant and voice actors to produce voice-overs in Swahili and or Somali
Work with a video editor and production consultant to ensure that translations are represented correctly in videos through subtitles and voice over dubbing
Translate a video facilitation manual from English into Kiswahili and Somali
Knowledge of Somali and or Swahili languagePrevious experience in translation of written material (present sample during interview)
Ready to work with minimal supervision with ability to work both independently and as part of a team
