Product Manager Job General Summary

The key role of the PM is to “own” the process of understanding the needs of the client and coordinating with the company’s internal team members to make it happen in a way that drives growth, revenue, and profit for the company.

This position will manage a team of Associate Production Managers, Production Assistants, and Data Reviewers, but the PM is ultimately responsible for the process and results of each project. Each day is different for a successful PM.

The ability to be agile and adapt is critical. In general, the role can be summed up as “owning all aspects of a project throughout the life cycle ­ from quote, to pilot, to pre-­production, through ongoing production and improvement. More specifically, the necessary traits for the role of PM can be broken down into the following categories:


Business Acumen


Understand the client’s business. Understand the value the company can bring to a client’s business operation.

Ability to communicate clearly, and effective with the clients both verbally and in writing.

Ability to understand the scope of a project, develop a timeline to achieve all necessary milestones, and drive the project through to completion.

Review contracts, fully understand terms and agreements. Ability to analyze risks and opportunities in client contracts and negotiations.

Understanding of the overall business and how daily decisions impact overall strategy and goals.


Creative Solution Development and Technical Acumen


Ability to translate the business objectives of a project into a workflow implementation.

Ability to conceptualize ways to decompose a complex business process into micro­tasks.

Mock­up wireframes of forms, data inputs, outputs

Understand client requirements for a project and synthesize them into business rules.

Own the successful technical implementation of a client’s business rules for new and existing production.

Own the evaluation process of a project’s accuracy.

Own the worker reputation management systems to maintain proper accuracy.


Financial Management


Own the financials of the project. Ability to project the financial status of the project based on client feedback, and production realities.

Own the improvement of production that can result in increased revenue and decreased costs. Understand and articulate the long term benefits and risks of improvement investment.

Manage tracking all costs associated with a project.

Manage the monthly billing process, ensuring that at all times the project team has a full understanding of how invoices have been derived and each client’s financial status.

Develop and defend cost estimates during the earliest phases of a project, while clearly defining any assumptions made in deriving the estimate.


Internal Coordination & Leadership


Interface with the workforce team to manage the project’s throughput. Proactively monitor throughput and accuracy, and devise intervention as needed.

Prepare training documents to familiarize workers on a project.

Own the accuracy output of a project, iterate with workforce operations and training to improve performance, and with engineering to optimize accuracy as needed.

Be cognizant of the worker’s perspective. Understand how tasks can be simplified and made easier for the workers.

Interface with the engineering team to discuss the technical scope of the project. Understand the technical implementation, and manage timeline based on resource availability.

Own the capacity projections and communications with workforce.

Own the relationship between business rules and worker training, and the related communication with workforce.


People Leadership


Ability to lead and manage a production team of 3-­6 people.

Able to teach others the practical and technical aspects of their roles.

Ability to work with peers collaboratively on project development.

Identify high performing team members and develop their capabilities for advancement.

Work with low performing team members to define expectations and bring them into alignment with expectations.

Provide care and guidance for team members from both a professional and personal level, investing in them daily.
Previous work experience should demonstrate the following:

Proven ability to lead people.

Proven ability to problem solve

Proven ability to quickly analyze a problem and determine the pro’s and con’s of various solutions.

Proven ability to prioritize work in an intelligent way.

Proven ability to multitask and adapt to new roles and projects as needed.
