About the position: To assist the Graphic Designer in design and layout duties.

Vacancy Re-advertisement: Administrative Assistant - Operations

Work closely with the Head of Operations, the Assistant Operations Manager (Facilities) and other teams in Corporate Services in coordinating the overall administrative functions of the Unit in order to ensure delivery of efficient and cost effective services to a wide range of clients.Arranging and coordinating the Units’ diary of works including organizing the Units’ and the service providers’ monthly meetings.Receiving and coordinating all the Units’ procurement needs which includes follow-up with the Procurement Unit and Financial Services Unit (FSU) to ensure timely delivery of goods/services.Assisting the Head of Operations in developing, implementing and monitoring the Units’ annual programme of work and budget including chargebacks for all services provided by the Unit.In consultation with the other administrators and the audiovisual officer serve as the focal point for all meetings/workshops and symposia taking place at Headquarters. And in consultation with the insurance service provider initiate the quarterly service review meetings.Work closely with the Procurement Unit, institutions collaborating with ICRAF and others, in the search processes for service providers, specifically those directly related to the Operations Unit.Assist the Head of Operations in the management of outsourced service contracts including Service Level Agreements related to:- Mail and Front Office, Travel, Taxi and Staff Group Transport, Pool & Project Vehicles and Catering.Manage the day to day operations of the ICRAF group transport by working closely with the bus monitors and service providers to ensure compliance to the agreed upon Service Level Agreements.As a member of the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Committee, work together with the Security Manager, Assistant Operations Manager (Facilities), the Head of Operations and other units in identifying and addressing OH&S issues.Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.A degree in Business Administration or its equivalent.Three (3) years’ experience with an international organization preferably in a facility management setting.Excellent inter-personal and communication skills.Ability to coordinate, prioritize, and organize workload.Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure with minimal supervision.Knowledge in events management.Excellent command of both written and spoken English.Excellent computer knowledge of Microsoft Office.

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Scientist/Country Liaison Officer to establish strong partnerships with various institutions and development organizations in the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. 

The Officer will work with them to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation. The principal role of the incumbent would be to coordinate the development of a comprehensive agroforestry research for development programme for ICRAF in Ethiopia including; capacity strengthening, mobilizing resources for collaborative research with Ethiopian institutions and with other national agroforestry and land management programmes in the Eastern Africa Region. The Officer will be expected to promote collaborative research for development activities with NARS and other relevant institutions such as educational institutions, extension providers, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector in the country. Under the overall guidance of the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and GRP leaders with projects and project proposals in Ethiopia, and in effective partnership with appropriate institutions in the country, the incumbent will be expected to perform the following tasks:

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Scientist/Uganda Country Representative to be based at its Country Office in Kampala, Uganda. Reporting to the Regional Coordinator-East Africa, the incumbent will seek to build strong partnerships with institutions and development partners based in Uganda and work together to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation.

About the position

Even the most ambitious mitigation policies will not prevent climate-related impacts from rising over the course of the century. Appropriate adaptation strategies and risk reduction measures to climate variability and change will therefore be increasingly important. 

With agriculture’s strong dependence on weather, smallholder farmers are especially vulnerable to weather extremes. Future changes in weather patterns and rising temperatures will likely be even more detrimental.

It is therefore necessary to identify current and future vulnerabilities to climate variability and change and develop scientifically sound and robust adaptation strategies in the context of agroforestry systems that mitigate climate impacts. 

It is also necessary to devise the limits of adaptation and identify complementary safeguards and transition pathways that allow for a ‘soft landing’.

The main purpose of the position will be to: 

a) learn from existing community and farmer practices to identify and map current and future vulnerabilities to climate change; b) analyze impacts of development projects and develop robust adaptation strategies and climate smart practices, with special focus on agroforestry systems and derive possible transition pathways; c) identify the limits of adaptation to weather extremes in agroforestry systems and devise opportunities for complementary safeguard systems.

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Head of Program Development to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

About the position

Even the most ambitious mitigation policies will not prevent climate related impacts to rise over the course of the century. Appropriate adaptation strategies and risk reduction measures to climate variability and change will therefore be increasingly important.

With agriculture’s strong weather dependence, smallholder farmers are especially vulnerable to weather extremes. Future changes in weather patterns and rising temperatures will likely be even more detrimental.

It is therefore necessary to identify current and future vulnerabilities to climate variability and change and develop scientifically sound and robust adaptation strategies in the context of agroforestry systems that mitigate climate impacts. It is also necessary to devise the limits of adaptation and identify complementary safeguards and transition pathways that allow for a ‘soft landing’.

The main purpose of the position will be to:

Learn from existing community and farmer practices to identify and map current and future vulnerabilities to climate change;Analyze impacts of development projects and develop robust adaptation strategies and climate smart practices with special focus on agroforestry systems and derive possible transition pathways;Identify the limits of adaptation to weather extremes in agroforestry systems and devise opportunities for complementary safeguard systems;Establish the costs and benefits of investing in improved management systems; andDevelop possible implementation strategies for up- and outscaling.Gather empirical evidence to determine to what degree and under what circumstances agroforestry practices and systems contribute to climate change adaptation on smallholder farms in the tropics.Identify the limits of adaptation and resilience of agroforestry systems to climate change and variability.Quantify vulnerabilities of farmers’ livelihoods to current and future climate risks by learning from community and farmer practices .Identify how social safety nets and financial institutions can improve the resilience of agroforestry systems to climate shocks.Develop robust adaptation strategies and climate smart practices with special focus on agroforestry systems and derive possible transition pathways.Provide technical support to development and policy initiatives, including NAPAs, CAADP, etc.Develop multi-institutional project designs to improve smallholder climate resilience and adaptive capacity.Contribute to fundraising and knowledge dissemination.Engage with and develop the capacity of partners in research, knowledge sharing and facilitating adoptionPrepare reports, guidelines and scientific papersOther responsibilities as may arise in the course of timePhD in social sciences (economy; development studies; environmental management; etc.)Practical development experience in tropical developing countriesSolid background in resource economics, environmental and ecological economics, environmental policy and development studies, ideally in the context of smallholder farming systemsDemonstrated experience in gathering and analysing quantitative and qualitative socioeconomic data through household surveys, focus group discussions, interviews and other participatory approachesExperience in proposal development and fund raisingAbility to communicate effectively with stakeholders, including smallholders, private sector and policy makersGood publication recordVery Good verbal and written English skills, knowledge of another language commonly used in Africa, Asia or Latin America is an advantageAgent-based or household modelling experience desirableTerms of offer

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is supporting the implementation of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP).

The Millennium Villages Project employs a community integrated development approach to help lift rural communities out of the poverty trap that afflicts more than a billion people worldwide. The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is the host institution for MDG centre under which Business Alliance Against Chronic Hunger (BMCH) is incorporated.

Business Alliance Against Chronic Hiaiger (BAACH) is a Public Private Partnership with a Goal of Acliieving Millennium Development Goals, Reducing Chronic Hunger and Poverty with Business led solutions which are replicable and can be quickly scaled up. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Agriculture and Business Alliance Against Chronic Hunger have partnered to roll out an Expanded Programme in Greater Siaya, Muranga, Bungoma and Yatta Districts.

The Ministry of Agriculture is the key Government unit responsible for the Programme implementation in line with Vision 2030 and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the Financing partner in the Expanded Programme. Business Alliance Against chronic Hunger is the Project Manager and responsible for the execution of the Expanded Programme.

The position
The MDG Centre BAACH Program, Ministry of Agriculture, United Nations Development Programme is seeking qualified candidate to fill 4 positions of Field Officers for Bungoma, Siaya, Murang’a and Yatta.

The main role of the Field Officers will be primarily to oversee the implementation of the Expanded Programme at the District Level and provide leadership to the local project steering committee and facilitate capacity building and extract Key learnings.

The field officers will be based in Bungoma, Siaya, Muranga and Yatta Districts and will report directly to the Program Coordinator in Nairobi, the incumbent will also work closely with local partners and other stakeholders

Duties and Responsibilities:

Managerial and Leadership
* Implement an integrated district co-ordination mechanism that guarantees and facilitates appropriate linkages between local producers and markets by providing information intelligence on markets
* Identification of potential businesses and livelihood opportunities through business profiling and documentation of lessons learnt and value chain analyses
* Ensure accountability and transparency mechanism for all financial support
* Prepare and present monthly and quarterly reports to Programme Coordinator

Implementation And Monitoring
* Ensure Implementation of Expanded BAACH Programme in the District in collaboration with Business Alliance Partners and local stakeholders in line with the work plan.
* Implement M&E frameworks, systems, tools as well as the District work plans.
* Implementation ot internal and external monitonng and evaluation tools Capacity Building
* Providing technical assistance, regular guidance and support and training to projects and groups in the respective value chain
* Provide full range support to registered business units, assess their capacities, evaluate through information gathering and consultative meetings and advise appropriately on business proposals, training and record keeping
* Field supervision of activities, identification of partners and support to the development of MSE associations and their capacity development by offering business skills and entrepreneurship development and training services
* Support the collection and dissemination of field information on best agricultural practices on horticultural production, retailing and added value chain
* Mobilize and sensitize local scale farmers to engage in small commercial farming using modern technologies and best practices through improvement of BAACH successes from pilot programme

Networking
* Maintain established work relations with government departments, Non- governmental organizations, Devolved units, Private sector and other stakeholders to make best use of devolved funds e.g. CD, economic stimulus packages etc to develop and improve on sustainable infrastructure and development of market
* Identify new local BAACH partners at the District level who can contribute to key competencies to support Programme Objectives

Minimum qualification and experience required for this position
* A degree in social sciences or any other relevant degree.
* At least three years experience in community development and project management or any other relevant work experience
* Management capacity and ability to organize, plan, communicate and report writing
* Proven track record and reputation for outstanding programme management and team work.
* Experience in value chain and or market development support for the relevant value chain
* Fluency in English and Kiswahili with essential working knowledge of Luo, Luhyia, Kamba and Kikuyu will be an added advantage for the District applied for.
* Valid Motor cycle driving and motor vehicle driving licence
* Knowledge of MS Excel/Access/Word
* Ability to work with minimal supervision
