About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Scientist/Uganda Country Representative to be based at its Country Office in Kampala, Uganda. Reporting to the Regional Coordinator-East Africa, the incumbent will seek to build strong partnerships with institutions and development partners based in Uganda and work together to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation. 

The principal role of the Country Representative is to coordinate the development of a comprehensive agroforestry research for development programme for ICRAF in Uganda. This includes capacity strengthening, mobilizing resources for collaborative research with Ugandan institutions and other national agroforestry and land management programmes in the Eastern Africa Region. The incumbent will promote collaborative research for development activities with NARS and other relevant institutions such as educational institutions, extension providers, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector in the country. The research agenda will include innovative research on climate change and agro-biodiversity, as well as participatory evaluation and dissemination of the best-bet land management practices and agroforestry innovations that address issues of soil fertility, food security and environmental concerns in the context of opportunities and constraints to scaling up the wide adoption of agroforestry technologies among smallholder farmers. The job specifically includes the following duties and responsibilities to be carried out under the overall guidance of the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and GRP leaders with projects in Uganda, and in effective partnership with appropriate institutions in the country:Plan and execute a collaborative agroforestry research for development agenda in Uganda;Write scientific articles and syntheses for publishing;Plan and implement an effective resource mobilization strategy aimed at supporting a significant expansion of the ICRAF-Uganda- project portfolio;Build and maintain strategic partnerships with government, donors, farmer organizations, NGOs, the private sector, education and research institutions (including other CGIAR centers) and international agencies with a view to institutionalize land management and agroforestry research and development in the country;Build the capacity of young scientists;Liaise with other East & Central Africa regional and national programme scientists and Uganda institutions for technical exchange and collaboration;Analyze, interpret, and report research and development results to ICRAF, donors and other development partners. Position: Logistics Manager

Duty Station: Kampala

Reports To: Chief of Staff

Job Summary: The Logistics Manager through his/her logistics team executes all subjects related to procurement, logistics, inventory and fleet management, promptly and in accordance with the DRC Operations Handbook.

In so doing the Logistics Manager will be responsible for timely meeting of all programme procurement needs and logistics conduct in accordance with the Operations Handbook and Programme Manual with adherence to the donor guidelines.

The position requires sound logistics eye to detail involving local and international procurement, import procedures, liaison with authorities, inventory stock take, vehicle servicing and repairs, compound maintenance and renovation, set of camps, communications and security systems, vehicle fleet and fuel monitoring, and reporting.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Post Doctoral Fellow will work in a project to develop smallholder pig production systems and their associated value chains in Uganda and will report to the Project Manager.

The Fellow will be part of a team designing and evaluating a pilot intervention to improve livelihoods, incomes and assets of smallholder households by raising productivity of their pig enterprises based on a package of technical and organizational strategies.

S/he will contribute to designing and working closely with national research and development partners to implement the research, with specific responsibility for assessing the financial, economic and social feasibility and appropriateness of the models being piloted, including monitoring of gender dimensions, farmer business and organizational strategies and potential constraints to adoption.

The Fellow will also apply existing and new conceptual value chain frameworks to identify pro-poor opportunities for improving the associated value chains. S/he will be expected to actively contribute to preparing strategic communication products including journal publications.

Specific qualifications:

Position Title: Research Lead, Mobile Financial Services Incubator (MFSI) project

Status: Full time project contractor (18 months)

Location: Uganda (based in Kampala)

Classification: Exempt

Job Summary: The Research Lead will be responsible for managing all stages of the research process for the Mobile Financial Services Incubator (MFSI), from initial design to data collection and dissemination. He/she is expected to have strong analytical and communicative skills and experience designing and analyzing quantitative research.

The project:

Recently, there has been some concern about the lack of innovation within the branchless banking space.

Very few service providers have gone beyond payments in their service offerings and explored the latent demand for other products—from savings to micro-insurance and loans.

Research conducted by CGAP also shows that many of the existing products have not reached the poor.

To address this problem, CGAP and GF are working together to lower the cost threshold of experimentation and set up an incubator that tests innovations in mobile financial services.

The incubator will combine in-depth research approaches with rapid product testing and aim to develop mobile financial services that are appropriate for the poor and that move the industry beyond payments.

Reporting and relationships: The position will report directly to the Project Director.

Availability:

The MFSI Research Lead will be expected to work a typical work week of 37.5 hours plus additional hours to get the job done.

The position will be based in Kampala, Uganda. This position will need to be flexible to work in local conditions, and be available to work across different time zones.

This position will require travel (20%-30%) within Uganda, and periodic travel to other countries as needed.

Develop a research plan for the incubatorWork with the AppLab team to determine product ideas that could be testedWork with Research Coordinator to hire and monitor researchers in the fieldFacilitate data collection process Analyze data collectedWrite-up research findings in various forms (blogs, monthly updates, reports etc.)Design monitoring and evaluation frameworkMonitor and write-up user feedback from the fieldShare feedback with designers who will make alteration to product prototypesRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position does not require unusual demands for physical effort.

This position may occasionally require physical effort to lift and transport boxes weighing no more than 50 pounds.

Our client The British High Commission Kampala (BHC) and The Department for Inter-national Development Uganda (DFID) is seeking to recruit a dynamic, experienced and adaptable individual to join their team. The BHC and DFID are both Departments of the UK government with operations in Uganda.

The Head of Corporate Services will provide leadership and management of the BHC/DFID Joint Management Unit (JMU) and will be responsible for the effective implementation of the BHC and DFIDs human resources strategies, estates, finance, procurement and transport policies and will have oversight for the safety and security of staff.

The JMU is a new venture which aims to bring together the corporate service functions of the BHC and DFID. The objective of the Unit will be to support the delivery of the BHC Country Plan and the DFID Uganda development programme by providing effective and responsive support services in line with best practice and value for money.

In the first 12 months a key function of the Head of Corporate Services will be to build a united team and create a culture which emulates the best of both organisations.

Key Responsibilities

To integrate and motivate a team of approximately 40 administrative and support staff to ensure high quality services.To lead on human resources strategies and ensure that both organisations have the resources needed to meet business objectives.To lead on the provision of estate services including security and health and safety of office and residential properties.
To have overall responsibility for the joint administrative budgets in the region of GBP 4.5 million including forecasting and development of realistic and responsible resource allocation bids.To Ensure effective financial control systems and procedures.
To oversee the IT and Information systems, including effective implementation and compliance with security information policies.To oversee the contracting and procurement operations, ensuring corporate compliance and demonstrating value for money.A Bachelors Degree in any discipline, but preferably in Management or Administration.
