Natural Justice: Lawyers for Communities and the Environment is a young and fast-paced non-profit organisation specialising in human rights and environmental law. We are a pioneering international team of legal practitioners, who conduct comprehensive research on environmental and human rights law, support communities and local organisations, provide technical advice to governments and intergovernmental organisations, and engage in key international processes in pursuit of environmental and social justice.
Natural Justice currently works in Africa, Asia and Latin America, with its headquarters in Cape Town and regional offices in Malaysia, India, and USA.

Natural Justice has been working with communities, NGOs and government agencies in Kenya since 2009. Due to increasing demand from our partners, we are seeking a full-time lawyer to lead and co-coordinate our work in Kenya. The successful candidate will be based in Nairobi and will be expected to begin work immediately.

What will the role include?

Working closely with co-coordinators in Kenya and South Africa; developing strategies, work plans and reports for activities across Kenya; providing legal advice to indigenous and/or marginalised communities and their supporting local organisations (including supporting the development and use of community protocols); supporting communities and community partners in strategizing and addressing infrastructure or extractive industry projects, community land and resource laws; supervising and supporting staff and legal fellows; conducting research and developing community-friendly legal empowerment materials; providing technical advice to government agencies; further developing partnerships with civil society organisations and networks; and organising and attending relevant meetings and workshops within Kenya, Africa and internationally.Minimum skills and experience required:A LLB, or equivalent degree;Demonstrated expertise in human rights, environmental and/or land law;Understanding of, and proficiency in the Kenyan legal system and institutional arrangements;At least two years of experience working with communities and/or civil society organisations or networks, particularly in Kenya;Experience with conducting primary and/or desktop research and preparing clear and analytical reports;Experience or keen interest in some aspect of international law or policy (for example, multilateral environmental agreements, human rights, or grievance mechanisms);Proven track record with financial management and fundraising;Strong oral and written communication skills, including through online platforms;Fluency in English and KiswahiliDesirable traits and attributes:Professionalism, strong work ethic, and personal initiative (“a self-starter”);Familiarity with interdisciplinary and/or participatory approaches and tools;Keen interest in and commitment to advancing the rights of minority/indigenous communities, particularly in relation to their territories, areas and natural resources;At least two years of experience in project management;Ability to work both in teams and independently, with little supervision;Ability to engage with a range of stakeholders; andWillingness to travel on a regular basis, and work with local organisations and communities in remote areasDeadline: 18 April 2014, 17:00 GMT

African Conservation Centre (ACC) is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the development of African Conservation excellence. ACC’s primary aim is to bring together people and skills needed to build East Africa’s capacity to conserve wildlife through programmes that conserve ecosystems and maintain continuous and open landscapes as well as improve income and livelihoods of local communities through sustainable utilisation of wildlife and natural resources. ACC works in pastoral areas in Kenyan rangelands and seeks to establish strong community based institution structures across the East African countries to address common salient conservation and livelihood challenges through a three-tier approach which integrates knowledge, environment and livelihood.

We seek to recruit a dynamic and innovative professional to fill the following position:

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT [NRM] SPECIALIST:

The Position: This is a management position based in Nairobi and reporting to the Executive Director. You will have overall responsibility to lead the planning and development of ACC’s natural resource projects under its Integrated Watershed Management Programme and evaluate the social, economic and environmental impact to local communities in the conservation sector.

Key Responsibilities: The NRM specialist will: • Serve as the lead technical advisor on issues relating to natural resource management primarily focusing on integrated watershed management along the Ewaso Ngiro South basin • Develop NRM strategies to ensure efficient use of and access to water and other natural resources for improvement of local livelihoods and provide a cost effective framework for monitoring and strategies for securing the ecological services provided by the natural resource base • Develop and enhance capacity of local communities to sustainably use and manage natural resources, while mitigating for negative impact • Work closely with ACC partners to conduct economic valuations of key resources and apply the results to improved NRM strategies • Identify and develop opportunities for economic benefits derived from NRM and biodiversity conservation efforts, • Ensure Community based Climate change adaptation considerations and issues are incorporated across program activities • Advise on and implement effective and appropriate methodologies and frameworks for strengthening ACC’s accountability; monitoring programme effectiveness and reviewing the impact of projects and partnerships to ensure improvement and learning.

Qualifications and Competencies: We seek candidates who are passionate, have at least 5 years’ progressive experience in the field of natural resource management with a strong emphasis in research, economic evaluation and natural resource planning.

Education: A Masters degree in the field of Environmental/Natural Resource Management or Biodiversity Conservation.

Experience: The candidate should have strong research background with solid experience in community development and participatory natural resource management in dry land areas, and in integrated watershed management issues and climate change adaptation strategies. The Government of Kenya has received financial assistance from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) towards financing the Mt. Kenya East Pilot Project for Natural Resources Management.

The Project covers 5 Districts namely: Embu, Mbeere, Meru Central, Meru South and Tharaka (2004). The Project duration is 2004-2012.

(vi) Assisting the District Gender, Children and Social Development teams in the development of computerized data bank on group’s activities.

(vii) Working with the Gender, Children and Social Development intermediaries to ensure that all messages relating to project activities are gender sensitive while ensuring gender mainstreaming in project activities.

(viii) Promote equal participation of women and youth in the management system of participating groups and organizations.

(ix) Promote women groups activities especially developing IGAs of interest to women and the youth, and the formation of support group for vulnerable households.

Ensure effective and coordinated delivery of livestock development interventions aimed at improving access to food and income for the livestock dependent households in project areas.

The Natural Resources Management officer will report directly to the Uganda based project manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Programme Planning and Implementation

Prepare in relation to each project, annual, quarterly and monthly NRM/EWS work plans, budgets and reports and submit to the Project Manager.Implement according to each project’s Workplan all activities related to NRM/EWS: including but not exhaustive: Community based NRM (environment, water facilities), Contingency/Preparedness planning, DRR related activities and Capacity building (training).Conduct Monitoring and Evaluation of project activities related to area of operation and jointly with other project staffs on the same project. .Contribute in reports (monthly, intermediate and final) compilation for submission to Donors. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
Closely monitor and report regularly on progress and impact of KLDP 2/ICRD III/L4L/REGLAP projects against set targets and progress indicators. Networking, Coordination and Advocacy

Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF) is a joint initiative of the Government of Kenya and the European Union that was established in March 1996 through Legal Notice No. 303 of 26th March 1996.

Under this collaboration and funding arrangement, CDTF is implementing a four year Programme, the Community Development Programme Phase Four (CDP 4) with two components, the Community Environment Facility Phase Two (CEF II) and the Community Based Development Initiatives (CDI) with funding from the European Union.

The CEF II has received funding also from the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Denmark (DANIDA) through the Natural Resource Management Programme (NRMP).

The main objective of the CDTF is to contribute to poverty alleviation efforts in Kenya by offering support in form of grants to community-based projects, which address basic social, economic and sound environment management priorities.

CDTF’s mandate is to oversee the transfer of funds for implementation of community based development projects, and further oversee implementation of projects funded with the funds.

Job vacancies have arisen in the two main component Programmes; CEF II and CDI that require to be filled on contractual basis by highly qualified and experienced Kenyan Nationals. The contract duration will be up to 30th June 2014 subject to satisfactory performance.

In readiness for a new five year phase promoting natural resource management, opportunity has arisen for employment of a dynamic and experienced Natural Resource Management Officer.

Reporting to the Regional Coordinator, the Natural Resource Management Officer will act as resource person in NRM work particularly renewable energy, water saving and waste management technologies appropriate to Agro-based SMEs.
