The Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF) is a Membership lead conservation organisation representing and bringing together a cross section of land owners and land users, including community groups, private ranchers, pastoralists, small-scale farmers and tourism ventures. The LWF takes a holistic approach to conservation with emphasis on major wildlife and environmental issues that cut across Laikipia as a whole. Working through its programmes the LWF currently benefits approximately 300,000 people and has largely caused Laikipia to become one of the most important conservation areas in Kenya.
The LWF invites applications for the position of Executive Director. Answering to the Board of Directors and Members of LWF, the ED will have operational and fiscal responsibility for the LWF with key roles being:Advancing the goal of ecosystem conservation through the LWF’s core programmes.Maintaining and strengthening Membership engagement.Supervising all core staff and sub-contracted organisations.Ensuring the LWF’s priorities respond to the needs of its diverse Membership.Maintaining the confidence of public and private sectors, and the support of international conservation and donor organisations.Fundraising for the LWF.Coordinating activities with KWS, KFS, NEMA, WRMA and other relevant departments of local and national government.Advocating and lobbying for the conservation interests of the LWF and Laikipia at local, national and international levelsRequired qualifications include:

The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing communications strategies and key messages for LWF awareness and program activities and ensures that these are disseminated consistently and with contextual relevance both internally and externally. He / She will ensure that LWF's mission and objectives are promoted.Develop, implement, and evaluate communications strategies for LWF programmesProactively research and monitor issues surrounding current LWF programmes, including monitoring County and National governments, media and the activities of partners/key stakeholders and incorporating the knowledge into LWF’s communications strategies.Advise the Executive Director and Secretariat on effective messaging and communications tactics.Market Laikipia as a destination for tourism, investment, and environmentally sustainable growth.Perform the role of key media liaison - managing and establishing media relationships, developing media hooks, and writing, distributing and pitching news stories, arranging interviews for LWF staff and ensuring they are on-message and adequately prepared to represent LWF wherever necessary.Develop and/or coordinate the production and distribution of a wide variety of communication materials.Relevant degree in communications, marketing, journalism or public relations.A proven track record and three or more years of progressive experience in a similar position or in a national media outlet.A keen ability to develop messaging and communications strategies for different audiences in terms of language, cultural contexts, and economic/ educational strataDemonstrated writing and editing skills.Excellent spoken and written English and Kiswahili required.The position will be based in the LWF offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia District. AWF seeks to recruit a highly motivated and results oriented Director for its Maasai Steppe Heartland to be based in its offices in Makuyuni and Arusha, Tanzania, with significant time spent in the field.

This senior position will be responsible for overall leadership, management and accountability for the activities
and performance in AWF's conservation program in the Heartland and is open to Tanzania nationals.

The Maasai Steppe Heartland is an important biodiversity area and forms part of the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania with parks such as Tarangire and Lake Manyara. It predominately occupied by Maasai pastoralists.

The successful candidate will be a highly effective leader in the conservation sector able to manage large programs with ecological, social, political, cultural and economic complexities.

He/she will also be principally responsible for managing the Scaling up Conservation and Livelihood Efforts in northern Tanzania (SCALE) program funded by USAID Tanzania that seeks to deliver transformational conservation and economic impacts in the wider Tarangire-Manyara-Kilimanjaro-Natron ecosystem (TMKNE) through innovation, the replication of lessons learned, and building the capacity of local actors.

He/she should have demonstrated experience in the establishment of wildlife management areas, the national policy for managing wildlife outside protected areas for community benefit. He/she is expected to be results oriented and able to lead a team of highly qualified professionals to meet program targets and goals and achieve results.

The successful candidate will also work with the Regional Director and other senior staff to design heartland strategies and provide leadership to implement field-based conservation actions.

* Post graduate qualification (PhD or MSc) in natural sciences, social science, project management, economics or another field related to conservation;
* Minimum 10+ years of proven senior leadership, project management, administrative and field experience in conservation;
* Experience and a proven success record in working and implementing projects in Tanzania or the wider East Africa; proficiency in both English and Kiswahili (spoken and written) is required;
* Proven experience leading and managing large complex projects budgets;
* Results focused orientation with proven track record of delivering and reporting results, and ensuring compliance with USAID and other donors requirements, and possesses sound judgment and strong decision making skills
* Demonstrated ability to build capacity of multiple stakeholders to engage in landscape planning and management;
* outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to build coalitions, negotiate, and manage conflict situations; and work with different cultures found in northern Tanzania
* Sound understanding of and experience implementing landscape-level conservation approaches;

* Outstanding communication skills with ability to clarify vision and strategy; good report writing skills and working knowledge of computers and MS Office software package;

Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF) is a joint initiative of the Government of Kenya and the European Union that was established in March 1996 through Legal Notice No. 303 of 26th March 1996.

Under this collaboration and funding arrangement, CDTF is implementing a four year Programme, the Community Development Programme Phase Four (CDP 4) with two components, the Community Environment Facility Phase Two (CEF II) and the Community Based Development Initiatives (CDI) with funding from the European Union.

The CEF II has received funding also from the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Denmark (DANIDA) through the Natural Resource Management Programme (NRMP).

The main objective of the CDTF is to contribute to poverty alleviation efforts in Kenya by offering support in form of grants to community-based projects, which address basic social, economic and sound environment management priorities.

CDTF’s mandate is to oversee the transfer of funds for implementation of community based development projects, and further oversee implementation of projects funded with the funds.

Job vacancies have arisen in the two main component Programmes; CEF II and CDI that require to be filled on contractual basis by highly qualified and experienced Kenyan Nationals. The contract duration will be up to 30th June 2014 subject to satisfactory performance.

Technical Officer - Natural Resources, Environment and Wildlife

Terms of Reference for a National Coordinator on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+)

Job Title: National REDD+ Coordination Officer

Reports To: Conservation Secretary

1. Background

The Government of Kenya has received support from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) under the World Bank towards preparing activities Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+ Readiness) and intends to apply part of the proceeds for employment of a National REDD+ Coordination Officer.

REDD+ Readiness activities refer to a set of activities needed to develop a National Strategy and Implementation Framework to support REDD+ implementation as a Climate Change mitigation process.

In support of these efforts, a REDD+ Readiness Preparation Proposal (RPP) has been prepared which proposes a number of strategy priority areas and actions to design and test REDD+ measures.

These activities include: a management and consultative approach that will provide the basis of all activities, (legal, socio-economic environmental and financial arrangements) for subsequent REDD+ implementation; the approach to design Kenya’s Carbon Emissions Reference Scenario; the means for monitoring the emissions and the approach to assess and subsequently monitor social and environmental impacts on REDD+ strategies.

Implementation of RPP to deliver the strategy, a reference emission scenario and monitoring system, will be undertaken over a period of the next three years.

The Kenya REDD+ Readiness efforts will be steered by an Inter-Sectoral National REDD+ Steering Committee (NRSC) based at the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife Headquarters at Telposta Building.

The strategy formulation process will be coordinated under a National REDD Coordination Office managed by the National REDD Coordination Officer (NRCO). The Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife now seeks to engage the services of a competent Expert to serve as the NRCO.

Scope: The scope of this assignment is to ensure successful implementation of Kenya’s RPP and to catalyze the national REDD+ process in building the national capacity to support REDD+ implementation.

Major Tasks

The NRCO will provide:

1. Management Support: The NRCO will provide management support to the National REDD+ Technical Working Group on the implementation of the REDD+ Readiness programme including: planning and budgeting of activities, elaborating Terms of Reference for various tasks preparing in consultation with relevant stakeholders); assist in administering contracts, overseeing budgets, monitoring activities, ensuring due consultation and participation of the Civil Society and REDD+ stakeholders, and representing the programme in key REDD+ events, among others as required.

2. Technical Assistance on REDD+: The NRCO shall be a qualified professional with technical competence relevant to the REDD+ process to provide technical assistance and policy advice to Government, the REDD+ Task Forces/Committees and Civil Society Stakeholders on REDD+ matters.

The main aim is to build capacities, ensure technical quality of the process, ease understanding of key data and results, and generate consensus among key stakeholders. The Officer should be competent and familiar with the processes involved in REDD+ strategy including development of a Reference Emission Scenario and a Monitoring System.

3. REDD Coordination Support: The NRCO will support the coordination and advancement of the National REDD+ process. He/She will also be responsible for coordination of work carried out by the various Task Forces that will be established to deliver specific components of the strategy. The NRCO will assist in the harmonisation between the different technical, financial and operational efforts towards REDD+ in the country.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Provide leadership on day-to-day implementation of the National REDD+ Programme,Coordinate work carried out by the various Task Forces that will be established,Ensure effective communication and outreach of the overall REDD+ process and support stakeholders consultations,Provide guidance and actively develop conflict resolutions and manage grievances,Liaise and coordinate activities to be undertaken by the REDD+ County Conservancy Officers,Support responsible for preparations of Annual Work Plans and Budget and undertake financial management functions;Undertake oversight on mainstreaming gender concerns carryout other duties as may be delegated.Reporting

The National REDD+ Coordination Officer will be under the supervision of the Conservation Secretary in the Ministry of Forestry & Wildlife.

Required skills, competencies and experience

The main required skills, competencies and experience include:

A Masters Degree or equivalent in natural sciences (natural resource management, geography, environmental science, forestry), resource economics or in a development-related discipline.A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in development, including at least 5 years of experience in project/programme management.Knowledge of international commercial practices on selection of consultancies and contract administration.Strong leadership, communication and managerial skills.Proven ability to plan, organise and effectively implement activities.Ability to coordinate and work in teams, as well as in complex environments.Experience in dialogue processes between Government and civil society, and on consensus building.Good Understanding of ongoing international Climate Change discussions and especially REDD+ policy framework2 years starting in July 2011 renewable for a further period of one yearA national strategy to support REDD+ implementation in the country ;a national reference emission scenario for the country; andAn effective Measurable, Reporting and Verifiable (MRV) system to assess the performance of various strategy options to reduce emissions and support livelihoods.Interested and qualified candidates should send their detailed CVs with daytime contacts and copies of academic and professional certificates to the undersigned so as to reach him on or before 4th July, 2011.

Kijabe Trust is a non-profit Trust that manages a conservation area for and on behalf of the Kijabe Group Ranch and Regenesis Limited a Tourism investor in the area.

Kijabe Trust currently seeks to hire an Operations Manager to be based in Kijabe Group Ranch, Laikipia. The Operations Manager will be responsible for providing leadership, management and accountability for the activities of the Kijabe Trust.

Key Responsibilities

* Manage day-to-day operations of the trust
* Transact payroll, ensuring compliance with Kenya regulations and timely payment of payroll liabilities
* Develop a fund raising capacity within the position to ensure that the trust can raise funds independently of individual partners if need be
* Responsible for all financial management of the trust
* Responsible for overall management of trust assets
* Generate reports for trustees and interested parties on a regular basis and to the required format
* Coordinate regular trust meetings
* Develop and manage the Trust’s relationships within host and neighboring communities

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

The Kenya Wildlife Service is a State Corporation, whose responsibility is to manage and conserve wildlife in Kenya.

The Service is in the process of implementing the envisaged Kenya Coastal Development Project (KCDP).

The Project aims at empowering residents of the Kenyan Coast identify livelihood activities that are more profitable, environmentally and socially sustainable.

The project will be implemented over a period of six (6) years from this financial year 2010/11. In order to implement the project, the Service seeks to recruit dynamic, innovative and experienced individuals to fill the following positions:-

1. Project Officer

Administratively reporting to the Assistant Director, Coast Conservation Area, the overall responsibility will be to ensure the project implementation component and sound management of natural resources as per the approved workplans, standards, budgets and quality.

The Project Officer will also liaise with the agencies in the component, stakeholders and the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) based at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (KMFRI).

Duties and Responsibilities

African Union/Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU/IBAR) The African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) aims to provide leadership in the development of animal resources for Africa. By supporting and empowering the African Union member states and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), AU-IBAR’s vision is of an Africa free from hunger and poverty in which animal resources make a significant contribution within the global arena. Founded in 1951 to study the epidemiological situation and fight rinderpest in Africa, AU-IBAR’s mandate covers all aspects of animal resources, including livestock, fisheries and wildlife, across the entire African continent, but fills a unique and strategic niche by working at continental and regional levels, with the RECs being key partners.
For the implementation of the Integrated Regional Coordination Mechanism for the Prevention and Control of Trans-boundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses initiative, AU/IBAR seeks the services of a Wildlife Expert.

The initiative aims at improving preparedness, prevention and control of Trans-boundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses through the strengthening of coordination and harmonization capacities of Regional Economic Communities, the promotion of Inter-REC collaboration, the improvement of continental technical coordination mechanisms, and the promotion of partnership with International Technical Organizations.

2. Major duties and responsibilities:
The position is based within the headquarters of AU-IBAR with frequent travel to headquarters of RECs and Member States.

The purpose of the assignment is to provide technical support in the field of wildlife health within the frame of IRCM plans and activities implemented by AU-IBAR in partnership with RECs and their Member States, AUC/DSA and international technical organizations (FAO, OIE and WHO) with regard to the preparedness, prevention and control of TADs and zoonoses at regional, inter-regional and continental levels.

His/her main duties are as follows:

* Provide technical advice in the field of wildlife health in the framework of IRCM;
* Determine the areas, with regard to capacity on wildlife health, that need to be strengthened to enable the region respond effectively to TADs and zoonoses and propose activities to be undertaken to strengthen regional capacity to address wildlife health matters;
* Provide technical assistance in the development of inter-sectoral collaboration between domestic animals, wildlife and humans;
* Identify areas of possible improvement with regard to wildlife health in the coordination and implementation of preparedness, prevention and control plans and strategies for TADs and zoonoses;
* On the basis of an assessment of capacities and priorities of the Member States and RECs to undertake disease surveillance in wildlife and performance of regional networks provide technical support to strengthen wildlife surveillance systems;
* Participate in regional and inter-regional events and coordination as necessary;
* Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors.

3. Educational qualifications:
A Postgraduate Degree (Msc) in veterinary medicine with a specialization in wildlife health or ecology. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

4. Work experience:
* Seven years proven working experience in the wildlife health sector of which five years in wildlife disease surveillance
* Experience in dealing with senior government, regional and international organization officials

5. Other relevant skills:
* Demonstrated in-depth understanding of TADs and Zoonoses prevention and control systems;
* Good knowledge of African Union governance structures, processes and mechanisms for regional integration;
* Self-starter with the ability to strategically plan own work;
* Good networker with the ability to maintain a positive and fruitful dialogue and relationship with the main institutions operating on the Continent
* Excellent communication skills.

6. Language requirement:
Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages is a requirement. Knowledge of one or more of the other AU working languages would be an added advantage.

Must be preferably between the age of 35 and 50 years.
