Help! I Don’t Have A Clear Job Description

Esther is frustrated at her place of work. She is on the verge of giving up because she does not understand what exactly her employer requires of her.

This is her story

I was excited when I started working here. I would get to work very early and leave very late. It was my ideal job. I had such pride doing it and did not mind the late hours.

Months into the job, things suddenly changed. My boss started asking me to do things that were not in my job description. These include serving him with coffee, cleaning dirty utensils, being sent on impromptu errands and being given the responsibility of answering his calls.

At first, I did not mind. I diligently did as I was told and somehow still managed to do my job. Life at the office was busy, but still okay.

However, the errands and other duties started piling up and eventually, they started to overwhelm me. I started slowly missing my deadlines and my performance started to go down. My boss was very angry and he sent me my first warning letter via email. I promised to improve.

For at least a week, I tried to multitask and do all the things that were required of me, including those that are part of my job description. This did not last as a few days later, I started missing deadlines again and failed to meet set targets.

This week, i received my second warning letter. I am very scared because I do not want to lose this job. It is the only thing that is sustaining me and keeping me afloat.

How do I politely tell my employer that the other tasks that he assigns me are derailing me from my actual job without seeming ungrateful and rude? Please advise me.
