Job Description


HIAS Refugee Trust of Kenya (HRTK) – Kenya OfficeVacancy Notice: Social Worker / Counselor, Kenyan National, Proficient in English and Swahili

(Important Note - Position open to Kenyan nationals only)


HIAS Refugee Trust of Kenya (HRTK) is a non-profit non-governmental organization committed to the assistance, protection and durable solutions needs for refugees at heightened risk in Africa, through the provision of direct psychosocial, social and resettlement services as well as through community outreach and capacity building for partners.


HRTK seeks to recruit a qualified and well experienced Social Worker / Counselor.



Under the supervision of the Centre Manager, the incumbent will perform the following functions:Main Duties & Responsibilities


Conduct case assessments in coordination with other HRTK and UNHCR staff and keep track of socio-environmental risks faced by refugees at heightened risk;

Interview separated children, unaccompanied minors and other children-at-risk for the purpose of preparing Best Interest Assessment (BIA) and Best Interest Determination (BID) reports;

Liaise with the Child Protection focal person to ensure services are reaching separated and unaccompanied minors, including specific services as recommended by the BID Panel.

Provide basic counseling and facilitate access and referral for cases of complex trauma to counselling psychologists.

Assist in the preparation and implementation of entry and exit reports for residents;

Design and implement daily activities and supervised play for out of school children;

Liaise with the Psychosocial Programme Manager to design, implement and facilitate daily activities geared towards the vocation/recreation of adult residents.

Provide supervised homework and revision for in-school children.

Follow up on birth registration of children.

Accompany residents to court cases and follow up on the same.

Assessment of vulnerable cases to present to the psychosocial panel.

Follow up on admission, progress and requirements of school going children.

Pick children from school in the evening and receive any reports from their teachers.

Perform other duties as required.


Education


University degree in Social work, Community development or Sociology with some basic counseling skills.

Experience working with refugee assistance sector or at risk groups will be a plus.


Skills and Competencies


Computer literacy a must: excellent working knowledge with WORD, ACCESS and EXCEL.

Good knowledge of human rights doctrine and working experience in counselling.

Good knowledge of child rights and prevention and response to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) issues.

Good knowledge of Nairobi and its environs.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.


Experience


No less than 2 years previous work experience, including at least 1 year in counselling or social work preferably in an NGO setting. 

Experience working with refugees a plus.


Languages: Proficiency in English and SwahiliClosing Date: July 14, 2015
