About FSD in Kakamega, Kenya Building on 15 years of international development, FSD’s Kakamega program partners with organizations to provide business development assistance, and microfinance to marginalized communities and individuals. Currently, the richest 10 percent of the Kenyan population controls almost half of the nation’s wealth while the poorest 10 percent hold less than 1 percent. Microfinance related services play a vital role in Kenya's economy. An estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of the population relies entirely on NGOs and informal associations for financial services. Corruption in the government and financial institutions has put an extra burden on the poor.

Gain grant writing and project management experience through designing and implementing a community-driven development project in partnership with your host organization. Access the FSD Alumni Network upon your return home to connect with like-minded individuals who help one another to reach their academic and professional goals through networking and regional events. FSD Alumni have won internationally renowned scholarships, studied at prestigious graduate schools, worked for prominent international development organizations, and have even started their own grassroots organizations.

About FSD in Kakamega, Kenya FSD and its partner organizations in Kenya work to supply training, education, microfinance, health care, and other resources for women and their families. Currently, women in Kenya do the vast majority of agricultural work and produce/market the majority of food. Yet they earn only a fraction of the income generated and own a nominal percentage of assets. Only 29 percent of those earning a formal wage throughout the country are women, leaving a huge percentage of women to work in the informal sector without any federal support. The effect is severe—nearly 40 percent of households are run solely by women and, because of a lack of fair income, nearly all these homes suffer from poverty or extreme poverty. Additionally, they suffer from grave women’s rights infringements beyond the gender inequities faced in education, healthcare, and property ownership—cultural practices such as ritual cleansing and wife inheritance that maintain low self-esteem for women while completely ignoring the threats to their well-being.
To help address these issues, FSD’s programs promote collaboration to enhance the capacity of individuals and organizations to address these pressing health issues.

Provided counseling, nursing, and activities (such as craft and artmaking) at a hospice for elderly and infirmed nuns who have dedicated their lives to serving the local community and have few resources or family to support themselves.

About FSD in Kenya
FSD has been working in international development for over 15 years, bringing the resources for sustainable, community-driven development to those who need it most. In Kakamega, Kenya, FSD brings this experience to the field, working with local organizations to implement meaningful, long term solutions to the biggest obstacles to development. Political corruption and human rights abuses have in part defined Kenya as an independent nation, A large portion of Kenyan citizens are left impoverished in a failing system of social infrastructure with very little access to education, healthcare, and natural resources. In addition to human rights violations on part of the nation’s leaders, the large number of people living with HIV/AIDS suffer further abuses. The stigma associated with the virus often prevents people from seeking proper testing and care, and those that contract the disease become part of one of the most marginalized sectors of Kenyan society, with AIDS orphans at the bottom of the hierarchy. These children, often concentrated in slums, not only have to run a household, make a living, and raise other orphaned children, they are the most vulnerable to other human rights violations such as exploitative labor, trafficking, sexual abuse, disinheritance, and violation of legal rights and access to public services.

To help the people of Kakamega overcome these obstacles to development, FSD works with community-based organizations to address the environmental, economic and social issues that affect them the most.
